The long standing competition between Hungry Jacks and McDonalds in Australia has been doing on for decades, and will probably continue for longer than we think.

Hungry Jacks however are reaping in the rewards from its App created in 2012 which is still heavily used today through social media promotion.

The Hungry Jack’s Makes It Better App (or simply the “Hungry Jack’s App” as everyone calls it) features a “Check-in & Win” feature which gives you a free product or discount code when you check in to the score via your social media account.

To check-in and win you must be within 1 km of a store and allow the app to check you in there on Facebook for your friends to see. Most people will agree that it is worth sharing that you’re at Hungry Jack’s with your friends for a chance at free food. You then have to shake your phone and an animation of a ticket printing out with a prize on it will come out.

The random prizes have generated discussion from people. People liked the sound of these prizes and wanted to get the app themselves. I usually do not eat take out foods, however I am guilty of downloading the app and shaking to see what i would win, all because the checkins and free foods were flooded on my Facebook page.

This app has changed the way many users choose their fast food. Many people check into the store from their offices, homes, schools etc to see what prize they got. If it was something they needed or wanted or a good prize they would then go into the store to get it. If was something that they didn’t need or felt like then it will redirect them to another store. However, you have already shared the link through Facebook and you didn’t even end up getting anything- A great marketing ploy used by the fast food company and they had to do nothing!

Hungry Jacks have been smart about the way they have given away prizes, for example if you win a free burger, you are almost always going to order a serve of fries and a drink. You maybe getting something for free but at the end of the day you are spending money in there when you may not have intended to at all.

An all round successful social media marketing use that has captured a massive audience and is still used today, even after 3 years.

Autism awareness through community marketing!

adelaide, Australia, autism, awareness, entertainmentbook, marketing, support

Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder which affects 1 in 100 people, with no cure. Autism is part of a spectrum that is often referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

People with autism share challenges in two main areas, however, their condition can affect them differently. Some people are able to live relatively ‘normal’ everyday lives, while others may require ongoing specialist support and care.

Today I met a little dude who is Autistic who got me thinking about the disorder and the awareness and fundraising available. I took to google and came across AutismSA an Adelaide based organisation that educates and supports the disorder. I noticed on their site the promotion of the entertainment book (which is a book filled with discount vouchers and promotions.) The sale of the book through their website highlighted that 20% of every sale contributes to their fundraising.

The entertainment book helps to inject over $5 million dollars each year back into charitable and community organisations (like AutismSA) across Australia. By purchasing a book you will not only give back to local restaurants, hotels, cafes and stores, you are also helping charities again like AutismSA offer support and education to people who need it most. An affective way to support your local community and local charities!

The video declares: “Yes. It’s real. Yes. The rumours were true. Yes. It’s available on June 1st (although you may see it sooner). Yes. It’s surprisingly delicious.”

Cadbury has been searching for Australia’s favourite flavour combinations and encouraging users on social media to offer suggestions with the hashtag #ChocPlusWhat?

Some suggestions of the suggestions include:

Cadbury has also been able to effectively incorporate social media interaction with its customers by offering them the chance to create their own flavour combinations through the hashtag which has been trending for weeks.  Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 8.52.25 am

Stirring a controversial chocolate combination has captured the attention of a large number of Australians. Vegemite is an iconic Australian invention which will more than likely attract not only chocolate fans but will entice a large portion of Australians to try it, which will of course boom sales for cadbury.

Vegemite Chocolate

An effective ploy of social media marketing!

What do you think of the Vegemite Chocolate? will you buy it just to try it?

Firstly this blog post is purely about the social media war between Australia and Bali. This blog will NOT state my opinions on the executions of the convicted drug smugglers who were killed two days ago. Any comments non related to the social media war will be deleted. You can leave your arguing to Facebook. Thankyou!

Furious Indonesians have hit back at Australians who threatened to boycott the country following the executions of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Thousands of Australians took to social media sites to voice their outrage over the use of the death penalty and urge people to cancel holidays to Bali, using the hashtags #BoycottIndonesia and #BoycottBali.

However it appears many Bali locals would actually be thrilled to have fewer of us flooding in to their country, even starting up their own hashtag in revenge, #BoycottAustralia.

Below are some of the tweets circulating social media sites from both Australians and the Balinese.

I even came across this small article in the local Adelaide newspaper- The advertiser, Where Aussie act, The presets were telling their fans to stop listening to their music if they disagree on their stance over the death penalty.

What do you think of the #boycott craze??
Have you been participating? Will the social media roundup stop you from visiting both Australia or Bali???

Australia’s new cyber-bullying watchdog.

Social media is a key communication tool used by children to engage with each other and the outside world. Thousands of businesses use social media to provide a platform to interact with children and young people and to allow children to communicate with each other. The issue of cyber-bullying has long been a concern for children, parents and the operators of these social media platforms.

On 24 March 2015, the Federal Parliament of Australia passed the Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015 (the Act), with support from all major Australian political parties.

The Act seeks to enhance online safety for children through the establishment of a Children’s e-Safety Commissioner and the implementation of a complaints system to remove cyber-bullying material targeted at Australian children from social media sites, such as Facebook. Failure to comply with the Act can result in significant fines.

CYBER-BULLYING PROTECTION FOR SOCIAL MEDIA AND BLOG SITES

Social media is entrenched in modern life. Companies rely on it to attract, advertise, retain and communicate with their clients and the world at large. At an individual level, it a primary method of communication between people of all ages and particularly between children and young people. Social media takes many forms: from ubiquitous applications like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to “in game” social forums that are a regular part of online gaming, to simple chat rooms, blogs and even websites that allow people to communicate with each other in “comments” sections.

In ‘first of its kind’ legislation passed by the Australian Federal Government, the Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015 requires all organisations that provide a platform for people to post communications on the internet to have specific child protection terms of use that prohibit cyber-bullying and provide a mechanism for complaints of cyber-bullying to be received and for offending material to be removed. The Act targets material targeted at a particular Australian child that would have the effect of seriously threatening, intimidating, harassing or humiliating that Australian Child (cyber-bullying material).

The Act establishes the office of a Children’s e-safety Commissioner, to administer a complaints system monitor and require organisations to remove social media posts consisting of cyber-bullying material, and can seek injunctions and levy fines.

What do you all think of this Act? Personally its a great concept, protecting the innocent is hugely important as well as eliminating bullying. However I do think it may be hard to monitor, therefore a lot of cases may be over looked or missed, which ideally limits its purpose.

Cricket World Cup WHAT????

Australia, Cricket, NZ, socialmedia, Worldcup
Written by an obvious non cricket fan

Ok so apparently my boyfriend reckons that I’ve been living under a rock for the last month, by not even realising the cricket world cup was on or was being held in Australia. Yeah I don’t watch much TV nor do I listen to what he has to say when i hear the word cricket but apparently I’m “way behind the times” when it comes to sport especially cricket!

To all you cricket fanatics out there I’m sorry if this blog offends you, but seriously if it wasn’t for social media and a lack of me not listening to a word that comes out of my boyfriends mouth, then i could have probably told you that the cricket world cup was on and this blog would be non existent…

Ok, so before I share my lack of cricket knowledge with you, let me tell you how my Sunday panned out…….

Sunday morning bright and early I get up and do what i usually do….
Flick on the Foxtel channel to V, listen to music and make breakfast. Followed by this I hit the Uni books to prep for Mondays classes. By this time my boyfriend was up and about getting ready for his day….. He mentions something about ‘hanging with the boys’ and by this time I’m so into learning about Needs assessments in practice for another topic I totally agree, yep, cool and say see you later… The day goes on, i go out for coffee with friends, do some shopping, the day flys by.
It gets to 8:00pm and 10 drunk grown men pile into my house, i think to myself, strange but yep standard on a saturday night…. They continue to the lounge and become not my problem…
A few screams and cheers  later on and I’m still not even thinking this is weird…

It gets to about 9pm on a sunday night and 10 very merry and happy boys start leaving, how can they honestly be happy knowing its monday tomorrow??
Totally oblivious to whats going on, I flick open my iPhone and log onto Facebook while deliriously watching keeping up with the kardashians (don’t judge). Flooded on my newsfeed is a whole heap of statuses saying: “aussie aussie aussie” or “you beauty” or “number 1” along with multiple images displaying gold and green.

GULP.
It just occurred to me what the boys were doing…….

Seriously if it wasn’t for the promotion, pictures and happy statuses on Facebook, I still wouldn’t have even know the cricket world cup was occurring, let alone the grand-final which Australia had just won (even though my boyfriend and his mates where here watching it).

IMG_9449

I reckon this is a great example of the powers of social media…
I don’t watch the news, read newspapers nor listen to what my boyfriend says (obviously) and I’ve managed to find out by simply logging on social media that Australia are now the best cricketers in the world (well according to Facebook anyway).
