What is Social Media:
Google defines social media as the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration. My lecture notes further distinguish that social media is applications that allow for sharing, participation, entertainment, community, publishing and commerce.
Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives and as it seems it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. According to the Australian Media News whom calculates and monitors monthly increases and decreases of popular social media applications, highlights that from December 2014 to January 2015 that Facebook users in Australia increased by 200,000 and TripAdvisor users increased by 10,000 users within 4 weeks. These constantly growing figures from just a month, indicate that the ongoing trend of social media and marketing are here to stay and we cannot overlook and believe the statement that “social media is just a fad”. Here are some of the top reasons why:
1) Social Media Is Mobile-
In this day in age majority of people over the age of 15 own a smart phone, which can easily access social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. With over 200 million Facebook users worldwide, there is a large portion of users who utilise social media mobile versions for convenience, entertainment and because they can access it on the go. With constant increases of smart phone capabilities, social media via mobiles in my opinion here to stay and is only going to continue to develop further in the future.
Social media has the ability to open up endless opportunities in the business world and allows for an opportunity for clients and businesses to contact each other directly. Social media has proved in many businesses that it’s a good leverage when making connections and also a great means to attracting new clients and customers.
3) Social Media is a good way to communicate:
Social media offers endless benefits in terms of being able to easily keep in touch with people for both business and personal use. Applications such as Facebook, allow businesses to chat, connect and share product information with customers. Social media has become the standard for quick and easy communication and is being utilized more and more in today’s society.
4) Social Media Enables Trust:
Social media has been deemed to be a trustworthy source and people find it comforting that they can log onto social media pages and websites to gather information and customer reviews. Figures from Barker et al. (2013) indicate that 71% of people are more likely to make a purchase an item based on social media referrals. In addition, we’re more likely to trust a brand or service that we see is trusted by a friend or family member online. Social media marketing and advertising allows us to ensure that we are consistently making the right purchasing decisions based on referrals from our peers, whether they are direct or indirect.
